Recently, the insurance company Allstate has tried to retain or reclaim its customers by showing them what could happen if they choose their coverage unwisely. Meet Dean Winters, the man behind the mayhem.
Dean Winters ? A Brief Biography
American-born actor, Dean Winters was born July 20th, 1964. He got into acting when his younger brother Scott (also an actor) suggested he ?do something with his life?. One of his first appearances was in the TV show, ?Homicide: Life On The Street?. He is best known for his role Ryan O’Reily in the hit show, ?Oz? which ran from 1997-2003. From 2004-2009, fans got to know him as cop Johnny Gavin, younger brother to lead Denis Leary?s character Tommy on ?Rescue Me?. Recently he?s played opposite Tina Fey on NBC?s award-winning series ?30 Rock?. He also recurs as Sarah Connor?s former love interest in ?Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles?.
Dean Winters ? Allstate?s Mayhem
His latest gig is the edgy, slightly off-balance ?mayhem? in which he plays a random windstorm who drops suddenly complete with branch on a new car, a ticked-off executive who gets his jollies suing young drivers and a teenage girl who gets a text message from her BFF and is ?all OMG? about her kissing the guy she likes. The commercials are two parts humor and two parts scare tactic, an odd combination that seems to work.
Dean Winters ? A Near Death Experience
Before playing the cause of accidents, Dean Winters went through a near-death experience he?s only recently begun to talk about publicly. In June of 2009, Dean fell ill with a bacterial infection. He collapsed during a consultation with his doctor and his heart stopped beating for 2-1/2 minutes while riding to the hospital in an ambulance. Dean spent three weeks in an intensive care until before he was well enough to be released. His health unfortunately took a turn for the worse one month later. He developed gangrene and had to have one thumb and two toes amputated. He?s since has surgery to rebuild his right hand and his health is much improved.

State Farm is again making headlines in Florida by announcing a statewide average rate increase for their auto insurance. The company will be increasing premiums by 9.2% for their Mutual customers and 11.8% for their Fire & Casualty customers. Most auto insurance companies have 2 different divisions, one for less-risky drivers and the other for more-risky. In State Farm’s case, Mutual is the preferred company reserving the lowest rates for their clientele. These are generally drivers with no tickets or accidents in the past 3 years. If your driving record is not-so-perfect, chances are you will be placed in the Fire & Casualty company. If you manage to find yourself in this group, there are 3 tiers available; either 1 Star, 2 Star, or 3 Star. 1 being the most expensive and 3 the least. The more tickets and accidents one may have, the lower the star. State Farm isn’t alone with their different companies for risk groups. Allstate has Allstate Insurance and Allstate P&C. Progressive has Progressive American and Progressive Select. GEICO has GEICO General and GEICO Indemnity.
State Farm isn’t the only company to raise car insurance rates in Florida. Allstate has approved a 16% rate increase for their Fire & Casualty division beginning January 11, 2010. The average customer will experience an increase of for their 6 month policy. The best way to combat these rate increases is to get auto insurance quotes from the leading companies on a semiannual basis.
According the Jack DcDermott of the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation (OIR), there is a growing trend in bodily injury claims. There also seems to be a greater number of PIP or Personal Injury Protection (Florida No-Fault) expenses, as well as fraud. Chris Neal, a spokesperson for State Farm, stated that since late 2005 until 2009 overall premiums for auto insurance have actually decreased 1%. However, the rising number of bodily injury and property damage claims, pip claims and fraud have led the largest insurer to begin raising rates. As the economy worsens, more people choose to commit insurance fraud to collect “free” money. In order for insurance companies to make up for these additional costs and fraud, insurance rates are rising nationwide.
McChristian of the Insurance Information Institute states Medical costs are rising 3.3% and the cost of auto body repair work is rising 3.7%. Florida is currently the fifth (5th) most expensive state for car insurance.
State Farm currently insures 2.7 million cars in Florida and is bigger than Allstate, Progressive, and GEICO combined in the state. Historically, the auto insurance marketplace has been extremely profitable here in Florida. This brought many competitors to our state, allowing Floridians to enjoy the benefit of the competition in the form of lower rates. Now with increasing expenses, more and more companies will be raising rates.

LPGA States Farm Classic golf tournament Originally known as the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Golf Classic, the tournament was underwritten solely by the owners of The Rail Golf Course for its first two years. A community-based not-for-profit organization took over to produce the tournament in 1978 and continues to guide the tournament today. States Farm Insurance became the title sponsor in 1993. Since 1980, over $ 2.5 million has been contributed to medical and children’s charities from tournament proceeds.On February 25, 2011, tournament organizers announced that States Farm would be dropping its sponsorship after 2011.In its early decades, the LPGA Tour was dominated by American players. Sandra Post of Canada became the first player living outside the United States to gain an LPGA tour card in 1968. The non-U.S. contingent is now very large. The last time an American player topped the money list was in 1993, the last time an American led the tour in tournaments won was in 1996, and from 2000 through 2009, non-Americans won 31 of 40 major championships.
Particularly, one of the notable trends seen in the early 21st century in the LPGA is the rise and dominance of Korean golfers. Se Ri Pak’s early success in the LPGA sparked the boom in Korean women golfers on the LPGA Tour. In 2009, there were 122 non-Americans from 27 countries on the tour, including 47 from South Korea, 14 from Sweden, 10 from Australia, eight from the United Kingdom (four from England, three from Scotland and one from Wales), seven from Canada, five from Taiwan, and four from Japan. Of the 33 events in 2006, a total of 11were won by Koreans and only seven were won by Americans. (See 2006 LPGA Tour for more details on the 2006 season.) In 2007, Americans saw a relative resurgence, winning 12 events. For the first time since 2000, two Americans won majors (See 2007 LPGA Tour for more details on the 2007 season.)
